Located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Central Park South, The Plaza Hotel is preparing for a long-term closure that will affect not only its accommodation operations but also weddings and private events. The hotel, which has been operating since 1907, will temporarily close its doors from January 2027 because repair and restoration work on its historic facade cannot be carried out alongside normal operations. Hotel management said the work is expected to take at least four years, while an exact reopening date has not yet been determined. The project is expected to require detailed planning because of historic preservation requirements, safety standards and the technical scope of the restoration.
The closure will have an impact beyond the hospitality sector, directly affecting New York’s wedding industry. For nearly 120 years, The Plaza has been one of the city’s most prestigious addresses for weddings, gala dinners and high-budget private events. The hotel offers nine different event spaces, with approximately 1,950 square meters of total meeting and event space. Capacity can reach as many as 900 guests in certain configurations. Particularly for luxury weddings requiring long planning periods, the venue reservation becomes the foundation on which the rest of the event is built. Once the venue is selected, accommodation, décor, catering, entertainment, photography and video teams, transportation and other suppliers are all planned around the same date. For that reason, the long-term closure of The Plaza, where reservations can be made years in advance, does not simply mean finding another ballroom. Some wedding programs may need to be rebuilt almost from scratch.
The Search for Alternative Venues for 2027 Weddings Has Begun
Following the closure announcement, the biggest question is what will happen to events planned at The Plaza for 2027 and beyond. Some couples are reported to have already booked other suppliers around their wedding date, sent save-the-date announcements and begun developing their event programs in addition to reserving the venue. This makes availability at comparable luxury venues across New York even more critical, particularly on popular wedding dates.
Replacing The Plaza is also not simply a matter of finding another ballroom with similar capacity. Its location opposite Central Park, historic architecture, combination of accommodation and event spaces under one roof, and long-established brand value are all important parts of its appeal as a venue. As a result, the search for alternatives will be shaped not only by capacity but also by architectural character, guest accommodation, central location, service standards and experience in managing large-scale wedding operations.

A Venue Change Can Affect the Entire Operation
In luxury weddings, the venue often functions not simply as the place where the event takes place, but as the logistical center of the entire program. Particularly for weddings involving hundreds of guests arriving from other cities or countries, hotel rooms, welcome programs, the main ceremony, reception, post-wedding events and transportation can all be planned around the same location. If the venue changes, not only the ceremony space but also accommodation blocks, transfer times and supporting events may need to be reassessed.
This integration is even more pronounced at properties such as The Plaza, where the hotel and event venue operate under the same roof. Historic spaces including the Grand Ballroom and Terrace Room have been used for major social events for decades. This makes the closure different from a conventional hotel renovation. One of New York’s key capacity providers for high-budget weddings will be removed from the market for a period that could extend beyond four years.
Choosing an Iconic Venue Also Carries Operational Risk
Destination weddings and high-budget city weddings are often booked 12 months, 18 months or even longer before the event. While this gives couples the advantage of securing their preferred date, it can affect a large part of the plan if the venue becomes unavailable because of renovation, a change of ownership or unexpected operational circumstances.
For this reason, cancellation terms, date-change provisions, the handling of deposits and support for alternative venues in venue contracts are becoming increasingly important for planners. For events with budgets that can reach hundreds of thousands of dollars, a venue change can create not only a financial issue but also a timing problem. If a comparable property is unavailable on the same date, couples may ultimately have to change the wedding date itself.

The Plaza Has Closed for an Extended Period Before
A long-term closure is not entirely new for The Plaza. The hotel closed in 2005 for an extensive renovation and reopened in 2008 following a restoration project worth approximately $450 million. The new project, however, will focus primarily on repairs to the building’s historic facade. Hotel management says preserving the architectural and historic significance of the property makes the work more technically complex.
The Plaza currently has 282 rooms, including 102 suites. The building also contains private residences, while some details regarding how the restoration will be carried out are still under consideration. If the closure beginning in January 2027 lasts at least four years, the hotel is not expected to return to operation before 2031. An exact reopening date will become clearer as the restoration program progresses.
