DarkSky International, a U.S.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the nighttime environment and dark-sky heritage through quality outdoor lighting, has granted Finland’s Syrjävaara region its first international Dark Sky Park certification. Dark Sky International said the certification recognizes years of efforts to raise awareness of light pollution and reduce its impact.
Syrjävaara (also known as Remote Hill) is located in the municipality of Kaavi in eastern Finland, within the northern coniferous forest region. The park offers a range of opportunities to experience the night, from the brightness of summer nights to the complete darkness of autumn and the star-filled skies of winter.
